What manufacturing processes are used for brass parts?

There are many processes for machining brass parts, often depending on the machining equipment and part shape. DSR typically offers CNC machining, milling, turning, drilling, and threading through various machining equipment.

1. CNC and Multi-Axis Machining

CNC is one of the most commonly used tools in metal machining, and brass is particularly well-suited to CNC machining due to its softness and low cutting resistance. Typically, they can provide milling, drilling, slotting, and precision cutting. Some of our advanced machines are five-axis, making them machining more complex shapes.

1.1 Brass Milling

Compared to milling harder alloys such as steel, brass parts milled using this method typically have a smoother surface finish. Additionally, brass’s excellent ductility makes it particularly suitable for milling.

1.2 Brass Grooving

Slotting is commonly used to manufacture sliding grooves or assembly channels on parts. It is a common manufacturing process that leaves smooth grooves when machining brass.

1.3 Brass Drilling

Drilling includes holes for screws, oil passages, or fittings. Because brass cuts easily, high-precision deep holes can be drilled without excessive tool wear. This allows for precise alignment of mating threads during the assembly of brass parts.

1.4 Brass Cutting

This process is often used to prepare semi-finished brass blanks. Compared to harder metals, brass leaves fewer burrs, reducing the need for extensive deburring and shortening the overall machining process.

1.5 Five-Axis Machining

When parts have irregular or curved geometries, five-axis CNC machines are often the preferred solution. They can manufacture multiple surfaces of brass parts in a single setup and can produce thin-walled housings, curved connectors, or other custom parts.

2. Through Composite Machining Center

For cylindrical or more complex parts, a composite machining center that combines turning and milling functions is more efficient.

2.1 Brass Turning

Turning is the primary method for producing cylindrical brass parts, such as shafts, bushings, and connectors. Through the low cutting resistance of brass, they can machine thin sleeves or small-diameter shafts with good dimensional stability.

2.2 Mill-Turn Machining

With our composite processing center, the outer diameter, end face, groove, and hole can be processed in a single operation. This improves processing accuracy (to ±0.02 mm) and reduces the processing time for non-standard or irregularly shaped workpieces.

2.3 Brass Threading

Thread manufacturing is another common process in brass manufacturing. Typical products include nuts, threaded rods, or valve stems. In some cases, knurling may also be used to enhance grip or prevent slippage.

3. Through Precision Grinding Machining

Precision grinding is a secondary processing technique performed after brass parts have been manufactured. DSR is equipped with surface grinding machines and precision honing machines (internal hole grinding) to provide you with brass parts with high surface finish and dimensional accuracy.

3.1 Brass Surface Grinding

Surface grinding is a process that uses a grinding wheel for high-precision surface grinding of brass parts. After our manufacturing, your customized brass parts can typically achieve a surface accuracy of Ra 0.8 and a manufacturing accuracy of ±0.005mm.

3.2 Brass Internal Hole Grinding

This process is mainly used for finishing the inner holes of tubular brass parts, such as bushings, valve sleeves, guide tubes, etc. By removing a small amount of material through high-speed grinding, the inner wall is smoothed and the hole diameter is ensured to be consistent, ultimately achieving a seamless fit with high-precision shaft parts.

4. Conclusion

The types of processes included in custom brass machining services are almost the same as those used for machining other metal materials, but brass has unique characteristics (low resistance, good ductility, easy machining, etc.), which allow each process to perform to the best effect, so that you can obtain the highest quality custom brass parts.

Is gantry machining a custom brass manufacturing process?

Gantry machining is a highly efficient custom brass manufacturing process suitable for large flat or extra-long brass parts. It is essentially a large-scale milling process, but unlike conventional multi-axis CNC, gantry equipment can cover a machining range of approximately 5.7 m² (≈61.35 ft²) at a time while maintaining high parallelism and consistency.

Their common applications include brass base plates, instrument enclosure panels, large heat sinks, decorative panels, etc. If you need to perform complex slotting, hole machining, or surface finishing on large brass parts, gantry machining is the ideal choice.

Why are brass parts so popular?

Because brass has high corrosion resistant and electrically conductive properties, making them can be used in a wide range——almost all electronic equipment and damp areas need brass parts. Their antibacterial properties are even more prominent, which is one of release ion metals, allowing them to be used in water filtration and fool manufacturing areas.

In the term of manufacturing, brass can be easily cut and reshaped without affecting their  strength and density. They will not crack even if they flattened repeatedly. That is why the shells, plates, and other shapes are preferred for brass machining. However, due to their moderate tensile strength, brass is more commonly used as a brass alloy material for nuts, bolts, and more, which need high strength parts.

What is the surface treatment for brass parts?

Brass parts are typically treated with nickel plating, zinc plating, chemical oxidation, or powder coating. These processes can be categorized by their effectiveness:

  • Electroplating: A metal coating is formed on the surface of brass parts through chemical or electrochemical methods. Nickel or copper plating is commonly used in industrial applications to improve corrosion and wear resistance; chrome plating is often used for decorative purposes.
  • Powder coating: A fine powder is sprayed onto the surface of brass parts and then cured at high temperatures to form a uniform coating, enhancing wear and corrosion resistance. For outdoor use, powder coating also provides excellent UV resistance.
  • Chemical oxidation: A dense oxide layer is formed on the brass surface through a chemical reaction, improving corrosion resistance while also imparting a uniform surface color or decorative effects.
Can brass be used without surface treatment?

This is feasible, but we generally do not recommend it because even though brass parts have extremely high precision and mirror-smooth surfaces, this will exacerbate the wear and tear on the brass.

If you are ordering brass parts for decorative purposes, you can also choose not to apply a surface treatment, allowing a natural patina to form, which will enhance the aesthetic appeal and decorative effect.

What brass materials are commonly used for brass manufacturing parts?

There are many types of brass, which can generally be classified based on their elemental composition into 260 alloy, 280 alloy, C360 alloy, 385 alloy, and 434 brass. If you wish to classify them based on composition and properties, they can be divided into alpha brass, α-β brass, and β brass. Currently, the market primarily classifies them based on elemental composition.

260 Alloy: This type of brass alloy usually contains 70% copper and 30% zinc. It is not very pure and contains impurities, but it has excellent hot formability, high strength, complex shapes, and rebound effects, which enable it to achieve optimal material performance and make it easy to manufacture and cool.

280 Alloy: This type of brass is commonly used in ship hulls to prevent barnacle attachment. It consists of 60% copper, 40% zinc, and contains iron elements.

C360 Aloy: These are usually composed of 60% copper, 35.5% zinc, 3.7% lead, and trace amounts of iron. Their manufacturability can reach an astonishing 100%, and they are the most commonly used material for custom brass parts, such as gears, bushings, and pipes.

385 Alloy: This type of copper alloy is commonly used in the construction industry and is also known as architectural bronze. It contains only 59% copper, but has a zinc content of up to 42% and a lead content of 3.5%. It is easy to manufacture and form.

464 Alloy: This type of alloy is also often used in ships. It is composed of approximately 59% copper, 40% zinc, 1% tin, and a small amount of lead. It has extremely high corrosion resistance and can adapt to various temperature changes. Due to its high manufacturability, it is now also often used in the manufacturing of other parts.
