Carbon Steel Machining Efficiency
Carbon Steel Machining Ensures Durability

Carbon Steel Machining Ensures Durability

Heat treatment imparts a hardened surface to machined carbon steel parts. They are also less susceptible to wear under prolonged friction or contact pressure, making carbon steel particularly suitable for use in gears and bearing seats. The high wear resistance of machined carbon steel parts reduces the need for frequent replacement. Furthermore, this wear resistance ensures long-term operational stability and prevents failures due to rapid wear.

Carbon Steel Machining Ensures Tensile Strength

Carbon steel can withstand significant tensile forces without breaking. Many load-bearing parts in construction, automobiles, and machinery require this performance. Carbon steel provides safety and stability in these applications, which means greater reliability for your projects because it reduces the risk of accidents caused by broken parts.

Is carbon steel easy to machine?

Different types of carbon steel have different properties:

Mild carbon steel: This type of steel contains less than 0.2% carbon, including grades 1010 and 1018. The steel is soft and bends, stamps, or forms easily without breaking. Turning, milling, and drilling are simple tasks. Heating cannot harden this steel. Mild steel works well for body panels, pipes, and bolts.

Medium Carbon Steel: With 0.2% to 0.5% carbon, medium carbon steel is stronger than mild steel. Grades like 1030 and 1040 offer moderate flexibility and some wear resistance. Machining requires proper tools, and heat treatment may be needed for tough parts. Gears, shafts, and similar mechanical parts are common uses.

High-carbon steel: High-carbon steel, like 1080, has a carbon content greater than 0.5% but less than 1%. It is very strong and hard, but also more difficult to machine. Turning and milling can cause rapid tool wear. High-carbon steel is not suitable for welding due to its tendency to crack. However, its high hardness and wear resistance make it commonly used in applications requiring high strength. It is commonly used to make cutting tools, springs, and knives.

What are the disadvantages of carbon steel?

Poor corrosion resistance: Carbon steel’s greatest weakness is its susceptibility to rust. It corrodes easily in harsh environments like moisture and rain. Without surface coatings like galvanizing or painting, carbon steel parts quickly develop rust spots. Over time, carbon steel machining parts lose strength. Therefore, carbon steel requires additional protection for long-term outdoor use.

Poor formability: Carbon steel’s formability is inferior to that of materials like aluminum and stainless steel. Medium and high carbon steels, in particular, are prone to cracking during machining. Carbon steel is often less ductile than metals. If a part design requires complex shapes, manufacturing with carbon steel can be difficult.

Unheat-treatable: Mild steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Mild steel is suitable for parts requiring ductility, but should not be used in applications subject to heavy loads or high wear.

What is carbon steel mainly used for?

Aerospace: Carbon steel is commonly used in auxiliary parts in the aerospace industry. It can withstand high pressure and impact, making it suitable for use in fuselage supports and fixtures.

Military and Defense: The military industry has high material requirements. Due to its strength and durability, carbon steel is often used in weapon supports and ammunition casings.

Oil and Gas: Carbon steel is mainly used in pipes, valves, and storage tanks. It can withstand high pressure and harsh outdoor environments.

Automotive: Carbon steel is used in automobile chassis, brake components, and some engine parts to ensure vehicle stability and safety.

What machining services are available for carbon steel?

We offer a variety of carbon steel machining services. Five-axis machining can simultaneously process surfaces at multiple angles, making it ideal for the manufacture of complex carbon steel parts. CNC milling is often used to create fine surfaces and contours, offering high speed and precision. CNC boring is primarily used to enlarge or correct hole diameters, ensuring accurate hole dimensions. CNC grinding can smooth part surfaces and meet high-precision fit requirements. Electrodischarge machining is suitable for difficult-to-cut areas on carbon steel, enabling complex shapes to be machined regardless of material hardness.

These services can meet your diverse carbon steel part needs. Whether you require high-precision parts or complex shapes, we have the right machining method.

How machinable are high carbon steel machining parts?

High-carbon steel has a high carbon content. Its hardness and strength are relatively high, making it challenging to machine. When turning or milling, high carbon steel machining parts are more susceptible to tool wear than low carbon steel machining parts. Tools should be made of harder materials, such as carbide. Furthermore, cutting speeds should be kept to a minimum, as this can lead to overheating and damage.

High carbon steel has poor weldability. High carbon steel machining parts are prone to cracking after welding, so direct welding is not recommended. If welding is necessary, preheat the material and allow it to cool slowly after welding to reduce the risk of cracking.

High-carbon steel parts can undergo quenching and tempering to achieve high hardness and wear resistance. It is well-suited for parts requiring high wear resistance, such as cutting tools, springs, and bearings.

In short, high-carbon steel is more difficult to machine than low-carbon and medium-carbon steels. It requires more demanding tools and processes.

What can damage carbon steel machined parts?

Carbon steel machining parts can be damaged in many ways during use. The most common cause is corrosion. Carbon steel has poor corrosion resistance and rusts easily if exposed to water for a long time. This surface erodes, affecting its strength and service life.

Another common problem is cracking. Carbon steel machining parts subjected to repeated high loads for extended periods can develop microcracks. These cracks can expand and eventually break.

Overheating is also a risk. If parts are exposed to high temperatures for extended periods, or if frictional heat is not adequately cooled, carbon steel can deform.

Machining defects can also pose a risk. Improper cutting or inadequate heat treatment can significantly shorten the life of a part.

Finally, overloading can cause damage. If carbon steel machining parts are subjected to loads far exceeding their tolerances, they can quickly fail.

Therefore, carbon steel machining parts must be protected from moisture and corrosive environments, while ensuring high-quality machining to maximize their service life. DSR can meet your needs.

What's the difference between machining carbon steel and machining stainless steel and aluminum?

Cost. Carbon steel is generally cheaper than stainless steel and aluminum. If you’re machining large quantities of carbon steel parts, carbon steel is a good choice.

Fatigueproof and stressproof. Carbon steel is much stronger and harder than aluminum, and also has better wear resistance. It’s particularly suitable for parts that must withstand long-term friction. While aluminum is lightweight, it lacks the hardness and easily deforms.

Machinability and flexibility. Carbon steel is easier to machine than stainless steel. While stainless steel often causes tool sticking and excessive heat generation during machining, carbon steel is relatively easier to control.

Applications. Carbon steel parts can be heat-treated to extend their service life, making them suitable for a variety of applications. While stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, it’s expensive and difficult to machine, making it not necessarily the most cost-effective choice.

Can carbon steel machined parts be surface treated?

Yes, carbon steel machined parts often require surface treatment to prevent rust and enhance their appearance. Common surface treatment methods include:

Electroplating: For example, zinc plating, nickel plating, or chrome plating. Electroplating creates a protective metallic layer on the surface of the part, insulating it from air and moisture, effectively preventing rust.

Painting or powder coating: Applying a paint or powder coating to the surface of carbon steel machined parts prevents corrosion and provides different colors for easy identification or enhanced appearance.

Heat treatment and case hardening: Heat treatment or carburizing are used to harden the surface of carbon steel machined parts. It makes them particularly suitable for parts subject to friction or high pressure.

Black oxide treatment: This treatment is common on machined parts. It not only prevents rust but also reduces surface reflection.

We offer more than just these surface treatment technologies. We can also meet any other requirements.
