Main Cast Iron Material Types
We provide you with a variety of cast iron material options, and you can choose the most suitable type according to your needs. Cast iron is an excellent shock-absorbing material with excellent castability, high rigidity, and is easy to process. The following are cast iron alloys, containing silicon and a small amount of manganese, phosphorus and sulfur and other elements, with better performance.

Gray appearance, graphite microstructure composed of many small cracks. The material has excellent processing and damping properties, as well as good wear resistance, making it suitable for manufacturing cylinder blocks, flywheels, gearbox housings, manifolds, etc.

White cast iron is very wear-resistant but brittle. The material has high strength due to its microstructure containing large iron carbide particles, so the material is also suitable for manufacturing wear-resistant components, such as mud pumps, ball mills, extrusion nozzles, etc.

Malleable cast iron is easy to machine, has good castability and ductility, and is able to exhibit excellent fracture resistance in low-temperature environments. So it is very suitable for making electrical fittings, plumbing fittings, gaskets, etc.

Ductile cast iron is a soft cast iron alloy with high carbon content, also containing small amounts of other compounds such as magnesium and cerium. It has excellent toughness and can resist strong impacts, so it is widely used in gears, brakes, valves, pumps and other components.
Our Cast Iron Machining Strategy
Based on the material properties and solving problems that may arise during cast iron processing, we have made the following strategic arrangements.

Cast iron has abrasive properties, so it is necessary to select suitable tools. We used geometrically shaped carbide and ceramic cutting tools to ensure the surface finish of the parts and the service life of the tools.

Due to the heat dissipation properties of cast iron, we systematically optimize the process. During machining, we use dry cutting or a small amount of coolant to prevent thermal shock and cracking problems.

Dust from cast iron machining has always been a trouble spot, so an effective dust collection system is critical to part machining. Now, our equipment has advanced filtration technology to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the entire working environment.

Due to the inherent stress in cast iron parts, it is easy to cause internal structural instability. In order to avoid this problem, we use stress-relieving heat treatment and a reasonable processing sequence. After such processing, the accuracy of the parts can be guaranteed.

Based on your part production volume and precision requirements, we provide green sand casting for mass production, resin sand casting for large heavy-duty components, and shell molding for high precision and complex geometrical parts. At the same time, DSR are also responsible for the final casting product quality.

We use surface grinding and honing processes to improve the finish and sealing properties of cast iron parts. Moreover, for hydraulic parts and engine components, ordinary machining is often not enough, and detailed grinding is still needed to improve the quality of the components.

Post-processing is also a very important step. Before precision machining, we use stress relieving to eliminate internal stress and prevent deformation during part machining. And to deal with burr problems, we will also use thermal deburring or mechanical chamfering to ensure smooth edges without sharp corners. In addition, we also provide cleaning, oiling and phosphate blackening services to ensure the surface quality of your parts.

We form an extremely hard protective shell on the surface of cast iron parts through electrostatic adsorption and high-temperature curing. This makes the part more resistant to impact, abrasion, and corrosion. This process is very suitable for agricultural machinery parts, truck hubs and other components.

Many cast iron components are often used in harsh environments, such as marine or underground environments. To provide these components with better maintenance-free corrosion protection, DSR also offers industrial-grade galvanizing services. Zinc undergoes a metallurgical reaction with the iron matrix, resulting in a very thick protective layer of alloy on the surface of the part. This protective layer ensures that these parts have an exceptional service life.

How to Cast Iron Machining?
The entire page is about our DSR cast iron machining services. I believe many people are curious about our complete cast iron machining process. Next, I will introduce it to you in detail, hoping you will gain a deeper understanding of it.

1. Preparation & Clamping
During the preparation phase, you need to inspect the cast iron blanks. If there are obvious sand holes or hard spots on the surface, I suggest you first use a handheld grinding machine to polish and clean them. Otherwise, it is very likely to cause tool breakage issues.
Furthermore, cast iron has low tensile strength and high brittleness, so my recommendation is to use a clamp with face contact rather than point contact, or use a hydraulic vise to control the pressure.
2. Tooling Strategy
You should also be very careful when choosing tools. Since the damage caused by cast iron to tools is mainly abrasive wear rather than thermoplastic deformation, when you choose a tool material, I recommend ISO K-type carbide. And if it is mass production, CBN is the best choice.
3. Cutting Parameters
During the entire cutting process, the principle of deep cutting and shallow cutting needs to be strictly followed. When roughing, the cutting depth must be greater than the thickness of the hard skin. If the cutting depth is too shallow, the tool tip will slide in the hard skin and impurities, causing instant wear of the tool. As for the cooling strategy, my suggestion is to use dry cutting. Try not to use coolant.
4. Preventing Breakout
Additionally, to prevent edge chipping of cast iron parts, you need to reduce the feed rate by 30%–50% when the tool is about to cut out the edge. At the same time, before finishing milling the plane, you should also pay attention to a 45° chamfer along the edge.
- You need to ensure adequate machine tool protection and dust extraction, and it is recommended to use dry cutting.
- Due to the presence of hard crust and potential sanding on the surface of cast iron parts, you must choose a highly wear-resistant coated carbide or CBN tool, and also take care to optimize the tool path to prevent chipping at the edge of the machined surface
- Since cast iron has low tensile strength and is fragile, you need to precisely control the clamping force when clamping cast iron workpieces.
Yes, scrap cast iron has considerable recycling value.
White Cast Iron.
The most ideal tool choice is usually ISO K grade carbide tools.
The most recommended is dry machining or using MQL.
Strongly acidic solutions such as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid should never be used when cleaning or treating cast iron. And in the machining process, you should also avoid using cutting oils containing chlorine extreme pressure additives.
The key is to reduce the cutting load during cutting and optimize the tool pass strategy. The most effective method is to use pre-chamfering technology.
The core strategy to suppress the chatter problem is to destroy the resonance frequency and maximize system rigidity. In terms of tool selection, I also recommend that you use milling cutters with unequal tooth spacing or variable helix angles.
No, cast iron is generally easier to machine than steel.
The cast iron machining speed depends on the cast iron material. The cutting speed for machining ordinary gray cast iron is usually set at 100–160 m/min, while for the tougher and more difficult ductile iron, the speed is reduced to 70–120 m/min.
Be careful to avoid using emulsion/soluble oil.
The recycling market price for scrap cast iron is typically between 200 and 350 USD/ton. The price of cast iron raw materials is usually maintained in the range of 600 to 1000 US dollars/ton.
The chips produced when machining cast iron are discontinuous chips.
