Case Study: Precision CNC-Cut Aluminum Mounting Plates

An automated packaging equipment manufacturer requires 6mm-thick 6061-T6 aluminum alloy mounting plates for use in conveyor line positioning modules.
The previous supplier’s problem was that the mounting plates had unstable hole positions and excessive burrs in the slots. As a result, the components required secondary trimming during assembly, leading to delays in machine commissioning.
Our solution:
Our engineering team reviews the drawings. The cable entry holes have an R3 radius, and the rail adjustment slots are 36 x 8 mm R4 slots. Additionally, we have specified the M5 countersunk hole dimensions as Ø5.5 through holes and Ø10.4 x 90° countersinks.
The machining process we have established includes: CNC cutting/routing, drilling, countersinking, deburring, anodizing, and final dimensional inspection.

Materials & Thickness We Cut
We offer cutting services for a variety of materials. Below, I will introduce these materials and their thickness ranges.
- Materials
| Material | Thickness Range | Recommended Cutting Method | Notes |
| Aluminum | 0.5-30 mm | laser cutting, waterjet cutting | Good for lightweight structural parts and clean machined edges |
| Stainless Steel | 0.5-25 mm | Laser cutting, waterjet cutting | Suitable for corrosion-resistant parts |
| Carbon Steel / Mild Steel | 0.5-30 mm | Laser cutting, waterjet cutting | Cost-effective for structural and industrial components |
| Brass | 0.5-15 mm | Waterjet cutting, laser cutting | Good surface finish; cutting method depends on thickness and finish requirements |
| Copper | 0.5-12 mm | Waterjet cutting | Highly conductive material |
| Acrylic / PMMA | 1-30 mm | laser cutting | Laser gives polished edges |
| Polycarbonate | 1-20 mm | waterjet cutting | Strong impact resistance; CNC cutting helps avoid heat damage |
| ABS / PVC | 1-25 mm | CNC routing | Suitable for plastic prototypes and small-batch production |
| POM / Delrin | 2-30 mm | CNC machining | Good for wear-resistant functional parts |
The thickness above is the common processing range. The actual processable thickness will be confirmed based on material grade, part structure, tolerance requirements, edge effects, and order quantity.
The unit cost of laser cutting is the lowest, with simple parts costing only a few dollars each. The unit price of water jet cutting is usually 1.5 to 2 times that of laser cutting. The unit cost of wire EDM cutting is the highest. The factors affecting the cost of cutting services include: material costs, cutting profiles, part sizes, sheet thickness, and order quantities.
CNC cutting service is a manufacturing process that uses computer numerical control (CNC) technology to drive cutting equipment, precisely cutting various materials such as metals, plastics, stone, and composite materials according to preset paths. Compared to traditional manual cutting, the advantages of CNC cutting lie in its high precision, strong repeatability, and ability to handle complex contours.
This depends on material thickness, part profile complexity, total cutting length, number of holes, and order quantity. For small batch samples, the unit price is usually between $10 and $80.
First, you need to assess the supplier’s manufacturing capabilities, whether it covers various processes such as laser cutting and waterjet cutting. Second, you should examine the supplier’s precision and quality assurance system. Third, you need to understand their material handling capabilities. Fourth, you should evaluate their delivery capabilities and response speed. Finally, it’s important to consider the supplier’s communication skills.
