Overcoming Copper CNC Machining Challenges
You must also know that there are many problems during the copper machining process. But the reason why DSR is able to produce copper parts that satisfy many customers. Because we can solve these problems perfectly.
Burr-Free GuaranteeWhen machining, copper is very sticky and prone to burrs? Don’t worry, we use sharp, polished carbide tools for machining, and we also optimize the tool path to prevent copper adhesion and ensure a smooth and flawless part surface (Ra 0.4 – Ra 0.8).
Deformation ControlCopper is too soft, causing the clamp to deform when clamped? Don’t worry, DSR uses professional clamping strategies (such as vacuum clamps or custom soft grippers) to secure the copper parts without damaging their surfaces.
Anti-Oxidation PackagingAre you also worried about the copper parts you receive turning black? Don’t worry about this, we will strictly protect the copper parts during the machining process and perform immediate post-processing passivation to ensure that your parts are as bright as new when received.
Strict Quality Inspection Process for Copper Parts
DSR’s quality inspectors will carefully inspect your parts. We use CMMs to measure the size, shape, etc. of the parts to ensure that their data meets the design standards. And we also promise to provide you with a material sheet to ensure the authenticity of the material. Furthermore, we test the conductivity of copper parts specifically. Only when all the parts are qualified will we pack them and leave the factory.

Copper Parts Surface Finish Process Provided for You
Our surface treatment process will give your parts a very smooth and shiny surface. Remove various impurities and improve its corrosion resistance.

Depending on your part type, we can choose the finest cutting strategy to achieve a surface roughness of Ra 0.8 – 1.6 without any additional coating. The lowest cost and tight tolerance control.

We use electroplating to prevent oxidation of your copper parts, which deposits a thin layer of metal (nickel, tin, etc.) on their surface to maintain conductivity and wear resistance.

A chemical treatment. We can use it to remove contaminants from the surface of your parts and cover them with a protective barrier to slow down natural oxidation. Even during transportation and storage, these copper parts retain their bright color. In addition, the cost of this process is much cheaper than electroplating.

We spray free-flowing dry powder on the surface of your copper pieces and cure them under heat. This creates a thick and durable protective layer on the copper. It gives these copper pieces extremely scratch-resistant properties and can also convert conductive copper surfaces into insulators where needed.

Through this electrochemical process, we remove impurities embedded into the surface of copper parts, reducing the surface roughness of your parts by up to 50%, leaving a bright, clean surface.

What is Copper?

Copper (Cu) is a non-ferrous metal that has good machinability and ductility, so it is often used as a processing material. Copper also has good electrical and thermal conductivity and can be used in many industries. Additionally, the material has good corrosion resistance and durability, and can withstand various harsh environments. As a result, it also has a long service life and does not need to be replaced frequently. Copper also has a long service life and does not need to be replaced frequently. Of course, there are many grades of copper materials for selection. So, when you choose to use copper components, you choose the perfect combination of high performance and long-term durability.
The C11000 is soft and can easily produce long chips and burrs during machining, making it difficult to control precision tolerance. C14500 has excellent processing performance, does not stick to the knife, and can produce complex precision parts without burrs and high finish.
In order to obtain a better surface finish for copper parts, the key is to prevent the occurrence of built-up edge. We must use extremely sharp, polished carbide or PCD tools with a high rake angle design to cut the material. During this period, we also pay attention to increasing the cutting speed and using high-pressure cutting oil to take away the chips quickly. In addition, climb milling will also be used, and the tool is strictly prohibited from staying on the surface of the workpiece.
We tightly seal all copper parts immediately after cleaning and passivation.
To achieve burr-free copper processing, the key is to establish a suitable processing strategy. We generally use sharp knives specially designed for non-ferrous metals and replace them in time before they become dull. At the same time, we will also optimize the tool path to try to make the tool cut from the position with the strongest structure of the workpiece. In addition, we also pay attention to maintaining a stable cutting amount to prevent burrs caused by friction and dragging materials.
Yes, we offer rapid proofing services for copper parts without MOQ, to help with your R&D from single-piece verification to low-volume trial production.
When selecting tools for copper machining, the first priority is to prevent sticking issues and ensure cutting sharpness. So you should give preference to uncoated ultra-fine grained carbide or PCD tools and avoid general-purpose coatings such as AlTiN. In terms of geometric design, you must choose special tools with large rake angles and mirror-polished chip discharge grooves, so as to effectively prevent the occurrence of edges and ensure the high precision and finish of copper parts.
The key to your choice is cost and durability. Type L is the first choice for commercial applications, high-pressure systems and machining scenarios. The pipe wall of this material can effectively prevent deformation caused by extrusion. Type M is only suitable for low-pressure civil pipelines. Although the cost is lower, it lacks sufficient structural rigidity because the wall thickness is too thin.
The most common mistake is that many processors process copper in the same way as steel. For example, using general-purpose coated tools or feeding too slowly. This leads to the formation of built-up edges that tear the machined surface. There are also some operators who neglect chip breaking control. In addition, excessive clamping force is also a typical mistake.
If your primary need is durability, then you should choose Type K. Its extremely thick wall provides the highest pressure rating and crush resistance. If you need to consider both cost and strength, you can choose Type L, which can meet the needs of general applications, but is less rigid than Type K.
Type L is significantly stronger. The reason is that the wall thickness of the pipe wall is much larger than that of the Type M of the same caliber.
Type M copper pipes usually last 20 to 50 years under normal circumstances.
FTG stands for “Fitting”, which means that the outer diameter of the port is exactly the same as a standard copper tube, equivalent to a male end.
Its pressure capacity depends on the pipe diameter and operating temperature. For example, a standard 1/2 inch Type M copper pipe is approximately 850 PSI at 100°F (about 38°C), but only about 375 PSI at 400°F (about 204°C).
The key to differentiation is purity and surface cleanliness. #1 Copper is the highest grade and requires a bright surface, no oxidation, no paint and no coatings. #2 Copper allows material defects, including copper with oxidation and blackening on the surface, paint or tin plating.
Because of its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, red copper is mainly used to manufacture wires and cables, busbars and efficient radiators. At the same time, it also has excellent corrosion resistance and ductility, so it is also widely used in water supply pipelines.
