What Is a Pinion Gear?
A pinion gear is a key small gear in transmission systems. It typically serves as the driving gear, meshing with a large gear or a rack to transmit torque, change rotational speed, or convert rotational motion into linear motion.
Due to having fewer teeth, higher rotational speed, and much higher single-tooth meshing frequency than the paired large gear, the pinion gear is often the component in the entire transmission system that wears out the fastest and fails first. This is why it has particularly stringent requirements for materials, heat treatment, and tooth profile accuracy.
For your custom projects, the pinion gear needs to integrate structures such as shafts, holes, and keyways, and also requires heat treatment and precision inspection. We will formulate reasonable manufacturing solutions based on your requirements.
Our Manufacturing Capabilities for Various Types of Pinion Gears
Different equipment has varying requirements for the structure, tooth profile, material, and precision of pinion gears. DSR can customize various types of pinion gears based on your drawings, samples, or application conditions.

The most common straight-toothed pinions. They enable high torque transmission, are highly efficient, and are cost-effective.

It runs more quietly and provides a smoother ride. Its sufficient axial thrust gives this type of gear excellent load-bearing capacity.

It is usually paired with a larger bevel gear to change the direction of power transmission, such as transferring power from a horizontal shaft to a vertical shaft.

It is not a single gear, but a combination of a pinion and a rack. When the pinion rotates, the rack moves in a straight line.

Used in gear-rack drive systems. We can customize the rack’s module, number of teeth, bore diameter, and other specifications according to your needs.

DSR can machine features such as teeth, journal shafts, and steps as a single unit, reducing the number of parts and assembly steps while improving the stability of torque transmission.

These are primarily used in equipment with compact spaces and intricate drive mechanisms. We can machine small-module, small-outer-diameter, and high-tooth-count designs based on your drawings.

We use a tooth-surface grinding process to improve tooth profile accuracy and surface quality. These gears are suitable for applications that demand high precision in tooth surfaces, low noise, and smooth power transmission.

DSR is capable of machining the oil seal mating surface on the pinion shaft, as well as the associated metal retaining rings, to ensure that the sealing assembly fits the shaft precisely.

DSR can customize pinion gear starters according to your OEM drawings or samples to ensure reliable meshing, torque transmission, and consistent starting performance.

We can customize various types of pinion sprocket, supporting custom tooth shapes, hole diameters, keyways, splines, and other structures.

Pinion gear shims are used to adjust the installation depth and axial position of the pinion gear. We can customize the outer diameter, inner diameter, hole locations, and thickness of the shims according to your drawings.
Custom Machining of Pinion Gear Mounting Structures
In addition to gear tooth machining, DSR can also customize different bore types and mounting structures for pinion gears according to your application requirements. The bore type and mounting method of pinion gears directly affect assembly accuracy, transmission stability, and anti-slip capability.

Round bore is suitable for standard round shafts. We can machine round hole pinion gears according to specified bore diameter, tolerance and surface roughness.

D-Bore is suitable for D-type shaft structure. This type of pinion gear can enhance anti-slip capability.

It forms a reliable connection between the key and the shaft. The keyway hole is suitable for pinion gears that require stable transmission of medium-to-high torque and allow for easy disassembly and maintenance.

It transmits torque through multiple tooth surfaces working together. DSR can customize involute splines, rectangular splines and other non-standard internal splines according to drawings.

The gear is secured to the shaft with side screws, making it easy to install and remove.

We can control the hole diameter tolerance based on your assembly requirements. A slip fit allows for easy assembly and disassembly, while a press fit is suitable for a more secure mounting.
Our Factory's Pinion Gear Manufacturing Process
The performance of pinion gears is often related to high-quality machining processes. DSR has comprehensive manufacturing processes and can produce customized pinion gears that meet assembly, meshing, and service life requirements.

Used for machining features such as the outer diameter, end face, bore, and steps of gears. A good turning reference can provide a stable foundation for pinion gears, reducing coaxiality and end runout errors.

We can perform operations such as turning, milling, and drilling in a single setup, which reduces errors caused by repeated setups and improves dimensional consistency.

Our gear hobbing process is highly efficient and produces consistent tooth profiles, making it ideal for pinion gear projects that require high production efficiency and consistent tooth profiles.

This process is suitable for machining tooth profiles near steps, hubs, and shoulders, and can also be used for certain internal gears and special gear structures. This machining method is more flexible.

We can machine specific tooth profiles, tooth grooves, or localized tooth structures according to your drawings. This process is ideal for small-batch production, non-standard tooth profiles, and prototype development.

After heat treatment, we use this process to improve tooth surface accuracy, surface quality, and meshing stability. This also effectively helps extend the service life of the pinion gear.

This process is used for machining keyways, inner hole connection structures and some internal tooth features, and is well suited for pinion gears that require stable torque transmission.

We use drilling processes to machine the mounting holes, threaded holes, set screw holes, positioning holes, and locking structures of pinion gears.

How DSR Solves Common Problems with Pinion Gears
Previously, our customers encountered various issues while using their pinions, and DSR summarized these problems. In our daily work, our engineers developed reasonable manufacturing solutions for these issues.

This is a problem that people often encounter. We reduce meshing impact by controlling tooth profile, tooth direction, pitch error, and tooth surface quality. Additionally, for pinion gears requiring high motion, we combine heat treatment with gear grinding to improve transmission smoothness.

This is another common problem. We will select the appropriate steel grade and heat treatment method based on the load, rotational speed, operating frequency, and operating environment of your pinion gears. This is to ensure that your pinion gears maintain excellent tooth surface hardness, core toughness, and wear resistance.

We verify the module, number of teeth, pressure angle, center distance, and parameters of the mating gears, and we also control tooth thickness, runout, and concentricity. This ensures that the pinion gear maintains stable meshing with the rack or mating gear.

DSR can customize gears with round holes, D-shaped holes, keyway holes and other mounting structures, and can also manufacture integrated pinion shafts.

We will allow for finishing allowances and carefully schedule the rough machining, heat treatment, finishing, and gear grinding processes. This allows us to effectively control the impact of deformation on the dimensions and accuracy of the pinion.

Poor lubrication, overload impact, installation deviation and long-term fatigue.
To avoid damaging the drive shaft or the gear itself, specialized tools are typically required to remove the pinion gear. Before beginning the procedure, the work area must be cleaned, and a specialized gear puller or hydraulic puller must be used to complete the removal.
The specific location of the pinion depends on the mechanical system in which it is used, but it is typically located at the input end of the power transmission system.
1. You need to clean the drive shaft and gear inner holes, removing any burrs, oil stains or impurities.
2. You need to accurately align the gear’s keyway or splines with the shaft.
3. Once the gears are fully in place, you need to install the lock nut, snap spring or set screw in sequence.
4.Be sure to manually rotate the drive shaft to check if the gear meshing is smooth
The most direct consequence is that the power transmission efficiency of mechanical systems will deteriorate. Next, align the keyway or spline on the gear precisely with the shaft. Once the gear is fully in position, install the locking nut, snap ring, or set screws and other fasteners in sequence. Finally, be sure to manually rotate the drive shaft to check if the gear meshing is smooth.
The primary function of a pinion gear is to transmit power and change the form or ratio of motion.
Continuous whistling or low rumbling sound.
When the vehicle is accelerating or coasting in gear, you hear a high-pitched whine or a low-pitched howl coming from the undercarriage. This indicates that the pinion gear in differential is damaged.
