Challenges in Large Shaft Machining
Machining large shafts requires large equipment, and as a professional manufacturer, DSR is equipped with advanced and specialized machining equipment.
Long and heavy shafts are difficult to clamp, support, machine, heat treat, inspect, and transport. Without proper process planning, problems such as bending, runout, poor concentricity, unstable dimensions, and surface defects can occur. These problems will not only lead to rework and material waste, but may also affect equipment assembly, operational stability, bearing life and complete machine delivery cycle.
Through preliminary drawing reviews, rational process planning, phased machining, stress relief, in-process inspection of critical dimensions, and final quality inspection, we help customers mitigate the risks associated with machining large shafts and ensure that parts meet actual assembly and operational requirements.
Additionally, we process shafts to the required dimensions and tolerances through subtractive manufacturing processes such as cutting and grinding, and create grooves for gear engagement on shafts through machining processes such as boring and drilling.
What Shaft Parts Can We Machine?
A shaft is a rotating component that transmits rotational power from one component to another. And we can make various types of shaft parts for you.

Our transmission shafts are capable of transmitting high torque and are compatible with a variety of materials and heat treatment processes. We strictly control radial runout to ensure smooth power transmission. These shafts operate with low noise and offer a long service life.

We can precision-machine the multi-step outer diameter of a shaft in a single setup. Coaxiality and dimensional tolerances are strictly controlled throughout the entire process. You can assemble them with precision and accuracy.

This type of large shaft is specifically designed for high pressure, high speed, and highly corrosive environments. We can precision-machine oil and gas shafts using special alloys such as Inconel, ensuring compliance with stringent API standards.

We ensure that the flatness of the flange face is aligned with the concentricity of the shaft neck, and we precisely bore the shaft’s inner hole. These flanged shafts provide reliable connections and are easy to install.

These roller shafts undergo high-hardness, high-wear-resistant surface treatments, and we strictly control their dimensional accuracy. This ensures that the roller shafts operate reliably under high-load conditions and effectively extend their service life.

We select corrosion-resistant materials to manufacture marine shafts in compliance with classification society standards. We can manufacture various shaft components, including propeller shafts, stern shafts, and rudder shafts.

The cam profiles on our heavy-duty camshafts are precision-formed, ensuring minimal lift deviation. And we also use heat treatment to enhance wear resistance, so that these camshafts have a longer service life.

The gear teeth are machined as a single unit with the shaft journal, achieving a precision grade of up to DIN 6. Our gear shafts have high transmission efficiency and low noise, making them suitable for multiple applications.

The involute splines on the splined shaft are manufactured using a precision roll-milling process. The tooth surface of this shaft can evenly bear pressure and can slide smoothly in operation. They are widely compatible with various couplings and gearbox interfaces.

Our large crankshafts have minimal eccentricity. We enhance their strength through full-body tempering and corner induction hardening, ensuring they operate smoothly under high-load conditions for a long time.

Example Project: Custom Large Drive Shaft
A customer from the industrial equipment industry needs to customize a large drive shaft for heavy-duty transmission systems. This shaft component needs to have stable torque transmission capability, while having high requirements for bearing seat dimensions, concentricity, and assembly stability.
For this project, DSR manufactured the component based on the 2D drawings and technical specifications provided by the client. The large shaft was made from 42CrMo alloy steel, and the primary machining processes included rough turning, heat treatment, finish turning, keyway machining, and external cylindrical grinding. During the machining process, we focus on controlling bearing seat dimensions, keyway positions, overall straightness, and runout accuracy.
After processing, we also inspected the product’s specifications and accuracy, and provided a dimensional inspection report before shipment. To reduce the risk of bumps and rust during transportation, we also applied anti-rust treatment and protective packaging to the finished large shaft, and used reinforced wooden crates for transportation.

ASME B106.1M.
Large shafts refer to shaft parts with larger size and heavier weight, which are generally used to withstand rotation, transmission or load. Compared to standard shafts, large shafts have greater length, diameter, and load-carrying capacity. They have higher requirements for material strength, coaxiality, circular runout, straightness, surface roughness, and machining accuracy.
The shaft diameter refers to the outer diameter of the shaft’s cross-section. It is one of the most critical geometric parameters in shaft design and directly determines the shaft’s load-carrying capacity, fitting accuracy and structural rigidity.
