Excellent PEEK Parts Surface Finishing Process

PEEK is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic with good machinability, allowing for the use of various processes such as turning, milling, drilling and engraving. But it is a little harder to machining than ordinary plastic.
When it comes to machining, both PEEK and Delrin have positives and negatives. PEEK has greater strength, high temperature resistance (to 260°C) and chemical resistance, and Delrin is less expensive, more tough and simpler to manufacture. Moreover, PEEK machining needs to use hard cutting tools , thus the processing speed is slow.Delrin is easier to process because of its lesser hardness and density, so the cutting speed is also higher.
The general drawbacks of PEEK are its expensive price, difficulty in machining, and strict requirements in processing machinery and tools.
In fact, compared with metal machining, the cost of PEEK machining is still much higher. First, the cost of PEEK material itself is high. Second, the high hardness and wear resistance of PEEK require the use of high-quality carbide or diamond tools for the machining with a low cutting speed, which increase the cost due to the tool wear and the processing time.
When processing peek, the main aspects are as follows:
- The hardness of peek is very high, so it makes a series of demands on the cutting tools and increases the cost.
- During the processing, since high temperatures will cause deformation or surface damage to PEEK material, the cutting speed, cooling method, etc. must be controlled.
- Since PEEK materials are usually applied in the ultra-high precision fields, it also brings out more strict requirements on the machining precision and the surface finish.
- The peek material itself is expensive, but it has little value in recycling.
