Steel Machining Parts

Steel is an alloy material that can be used in many fields. It usually contains iron, carbon, chromium, tungsten, manganese, and vanadium. Among them, iron accounts are the highest proportion, usually more than 97%. Besides, depending on the carbon content, steel can be divided into low-carbon, medium-carbon, and high-carbon steel. We can manufacture all three types of steel, providing you with parts such as building structures, shafts, gears, and springs.

Due to the suddenness of the order, we only had basic parameters, but fortunately, their engineers remained in close contact with us, and we ultimately received the parts ahead of schedule. They were highly accurate and fit perfectly into the equipment.”

What types of steel are commonly used in CNC-machined parts?

There are many steels can be used for machining parts, and they can be divided into 3 categories in different classification methods.

1. Classified by Carbon Content

Based on carbon content, steels are generally divided into three groups: low, medium, and high-carbon steel.

1.1  Low-Carbon Steel(Mild Steel)

Low-Carbon Steels also know as Mild carbon steels is a type of soft steel with lower hardness compared to other types of steel, but it offers excellent ductility, making it easy to bend and form. Their carbon content is <0.3%,  also one of the most commonly used steels include 1018 and Q235, and primarily used for workpieces such as threads and bolts, as well as tableware and cookware. When your requires excellent weldability and high cost-effectiveness, mild steel is the ideal choice.

1.2 Medium Carbon Steel

Medium carbon steel has a higher carbon content (0.3%~0.6%)and manganese content. It is strong and tough, can withstand high loads, impact, and wear, and becomes even stronger after heat treatment. Their common grades include 1045, 4140, and 4340. Typically used in various parts that require frequent operation, such as gears and shafts.

1.3 High Carbon Steel

High carbon steel has >0.6% carbon content, making it is one of the hardest steels. However, it is brittle and needs surface treatment to prevent carking, and improved hardness and wear resistance, common grades are 1060, 1070, and 1059.

2.2 Classification Based On Contained Elements

Combining other metallic elements, steel can achieve higher corrosion resistance, strength, and tensile capacity. Based on element content, it can be divided into alloy steel and stainless steel.

2.1 Alloy Steel

In addition to carbon steel, alloy steel contains various elements such as chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), and nickel (Ni). These elements typically account for 8% of the total composition, giving alloy steel extremely high strength. Additionally, sulfur and phosphorus are added to enhance impact resistance, or a small amount of vanadium is added to strengthen the material and improve grain structure.

2.2 Stainless Steel

Stainless steel boasts excellent corrosion resistance, thanks to its chromium content of at least 10.5%. This chromium forms an extremely thin and durable passivation film on the surface, effectively isolating it from oxygen and moisture, thus achieving its “rustproof” appearance.

Furthermore, it is hygienic, non-toxic, easy to clean and disinfect, and aesthetically pleasing, making it the material of choice for industries with stringent cleanliness and corrosion resistance requirements, such as medical surgical instruments, food processing equipment, pharmaceutical machinery, and chemical containers.

3.Austenitic/Ferritic/Martensitic/Duplex Steel

This classification is mainly used for stainless steel, classified according to metallurgy.

3.1 Austenitic Steel

Austenitic steel has a face-centered cubic crystal structure, contains at least 16% chromium and 10.5% nickel, making it has extremely strong corrosion resistance and extremely high yield strength and tensile strength. The most common grades are 304/316 stainless steel, which is often used in springs, blades, injection needles, and more.

3.2 Ferritic

Ferritic stainless steel contains 10.5% to 30% chromium, a high iron content, and less than 0.1% carbon. This material cannot be heat treated and can only be processed by cold rolling. Common grades include 409, 430, and 446. It is primarily used in automotive interiors and decorative architectural wall panels.

3.3 Martensite

This type of stainless steel possesses strong magnetism and good electrical conductivity. Its chromium content is typically between 11.5% and 18%, similar to ferrite, but its carbon content is approximately 1.2%. Due to its low nickel content, making it less corrosive than other stainless steels, common stainless steels include 431, 440A, and 416, and are generally used in shafts, bushings, valves, and other applications.

3.4 Duplex Steel

Duplex steel is typically combination 50% austenite and 50% ferrite. They can providing exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, and toughness, making duplex steel machining parts can widely used in the shipbuilding industry, including components such as rudders, shafts, and pumps.

What are the common steel machining parts machining steps?

Like all metal machining parts, steel parts are typically machined by CNC milling, turning, drilling, and grinding.

CNC Milling

If you need complex steel parts like gears and brackets, their high rigidity leads to high cutting forces, making them difficult to form using conventional equipment. We use multi-axis machining centers to complete multi-angle machining in a single setup, ensuring structural integrity and high efficiency.

CNC Turning

Since Steel has high hardness and toughness, DSR uses the multi-axis machining centers to manufacture long shafts, bushings, and threaded parts with high concentricity and dimensional tolerance of  ±0.01mm.CNC Drilling

Almost all steel machining parts require drilling. DSR ensures hole position accuracy and thread durability through high-rigidity tools and coolant control, making it suitable for mounting holes, locating holes, connecting holes, etc.

CNC Grinding

Grinding is a post-processing step used to improve the surface and dimensional accuracy of steel workpieces. Due to the high hardness of steel, grinding is the most critical process for enhancing its wear resistance.DSR has multiple multi-axis CNC machining equipment and machining centers, gantry machining centers, grinding equipment, etc. to meet your different processing needs.

What surface treatment services does DSR offer?

We can usually provide anodizing, black oxidation, phosphating, electroplating, spraying, surface hardening, and galvanizing for your steel machining parts. Among these, anodizing and black oxidation are the most popular choices among our customers.
