Delicate Grinding
Regardless of the method used to make the valve seat ring, after being pressed into the cylinder head, or in the case of independent valve seat rings, its sealing surface often needs to be conically machined. We use special valve seat reamers and grinding paste to machine your valve seat with a precise sealing cone surface and accurate cone angle. In addition, your valve seat will also obtain an excellent surface finish to ensure reliable sealing.
How We Manufacture Your Premium Valve Seats
Part 1: Powder Metallurgy
What is powder metallurgy?
Powder metallurgy is a process that presses metal powder into a specific shape and then heats it to a temperature below its melting point to bind the metal particles together. Common metal powders used in the manufacturing process of powder valve seats include iron powder. Alloy powders such as tungsten carbide, chromium carbide, cobalt powder, nickel powder, copper powder, etc, can also be used to improve the hardness, toughness, and thermal conductivity of the valve seat.
The processes of powder metallurgy:
Raw Material Mixing—Mix iron powder or iron alloy powder with various alloy element powders in precise proportions.
Compacting—A large, high-precision hydraulic press is used to press the mixed powder into a mold under extremely high pressure, forming a ring-shaped “green compact” that is close to its net shape.
Sintering—The green body is fed into a continuous sintering furnace and heated to a temperature close to the melting point of the main components in a controlled reducing atmosphere (such as a hydrogen/nitrogen mixture). Diffusion occurs between the powder particles, forming metallurgical bonds, resulting in shrinkage and high strength.
Optional Post-Processing—Heat treatment, such as carburizing and quenching or overall quenching and tempering, further increases surface hardness or overall hardness. Secondary processing involves repressing valve seats whose dimensions have slightly changed after sintering to achieve their final precise size and shape, and further increase density.
Advantages of powdered valve seats:
Flexibility of Material—Powder metallurgy has many optional materials, which allows for flexible customization of valve seats to meet diverse needs.
Flexibility of Shapes—Powder metallurgy can produce valve seats of various complex shapes, which are suitable for most valves.
Cost-effectiveness—The green body of powder metallurgy compacting is close to the final shape and size required by the valve seat, so that the valve seat manufacturing requires only a small amount of processing and material waste, which is a more cost-effective option, especially for mass production.
High-Performance—The valve seats in more than 70% of modern engines are made of powder metallurgy, which can withstand high pressure, high temperature, and wear.
Part 2: Forging
Processes of Forging Valve Seats:
Step 1—Cut the appropriate size of the blank from the metal bar.
Step 2—Place the blank or heated blank into a die and forge it into a ring close to the final shape to refine the grain structure and increase the strength.
Step 3—The valve seat is given the required hardness and mechanical properties through heat treatment such as quenching and tempering.
Step 4—Achieve higher precision through turning, drilling (as required), and grinding of internal and external end faces.
Advantages of Forging Valve Seats:
Superior Strength and Durability—Forging aligns the metal grain flow, creating a valve seat that can withstand high temperature and high pressure without deformation or failure.
Better Sealing Performance—Closed-die forging ensures tight tolerances, reduces leak paths, and improves sealing efficiency, especially in high-pressure systems.
Long Service Life—The forging process can minimize the defects and pores inside the valve seat, thereby improving fatigue resistance, and is suitable for projects that require long-term use.
Part 3: Casting
Processes of Casting Valve Seats:
Molten alloys (such as Stellite or certain high-alloy cast irons/steels) are poured into a mold to form the casting.
The casting is cleaned.
Heat-treated as needed.
Finally, extensive machining is performed to achieve the final dimensions and a smooth sealing surface.
Part 4: CNC Machining
Why is CNC Machining So Important When Manufacturing the Valve Seats?
Valve seats require complex angles and contours for optimal flow and performance. CNC machining can create these complex geometries accurately and repeatably.
Part 5: How to Select?
How do you choose between powder metallurgy, forging, and casting? As mentioned above, powder metallurgy is the most widely used and cost-effective solution. However, the specific choice depends on the application. Forged valve seats offer the best resistance to high temperatures, high pressures, and corrosion, making them the best option for applications in marine propulsion systems. However, mass production costs are higher. For applications in low-speed engines, cast valve seats can also be considered.
DSR has a professional project team with extensive industry knowledge and can recommend the most suitable solution based on your project’s performance requirements and budget.
Valve seats are critical components in various mechanical and fluid systems, primarily responsible for sealing and flow control. They provide the mating surface for valves, ensuring a tight seal to prevent leakage and maintain system pressure or flow. They are widely used in industries such as automotive, oil and gas, water treatment, and power generation.
The key difference between integral valve seats and insert seats is the way they are manufactured.
The integral valve seats are normally machined directly into the cylinder head casting and are made of the same material as the cylinder head. They are more affordable and provide excellent sealing performance. But they are also more difficult to replace if damaged, and not suitable for every material.
The insert valve seats are usually made of materials with higher hardness, better wear resistance, and can be replaced whenever they are worn. Due to the materials, insert valve seats exhibit better heat resistance, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. However, they cost more than the integral valve seats because of more complex manufacturing and more expensive materials.
The service life of a valve seat depends on its application and how it is used in a valve system.
In a performance engine, which can be the most harsh environment for valve seats, the valve seat is likely not the first component to fail. Once the valve breaks down, the valve seat must be replaced accordingly, too. For performance racing engines, the valve may need frequent replacement, and the valve seat can’t last long. In a personal car engine, a good valve seat can last up to 150,000 miles.
Our engineers can help you estimate the approximate service life of the valve seat based on your applications. You don’t need to worry about the service life of your valve seats because we will give frequent customers a considerable discount.
The cost of a valve seat is influenced by many factors. Such as the materials, the complexity of the design, and the manufacturing technique. The specific cost also depends on the customized items based on your requirements.
