Advantages of DSR Wire EDM Machining

High Precision
High Precision

Machining accuracy can reach ±0.005 mm or even higher. Suitable for applications with extremely high dimensional requirements, such as molds and precision parts.

No Cutting Force, No Deformation
No Cutting Force, No Deformation

There is no contact between the workpiece and the wire electrode; material is removed by spark discharge. This makes it particularly suitable for machining thin-walled and small parts, without deformation due to cutting forces.

Capable of Machining High-Hardness Materials
Capable of Machining High-Hardness Materials

Unaffected by material hardness, it can process any conductive material (such as hardened steel, cemented carbide, and titanium alloy). It can easily handle materials that are difficult to cut with other tools.

Strong Complex Shape Capability
Strong Complex Shape Capability

Capable of machining complex contours, sharp angles, fine grooves, and even confined spaces. It is commonly used in the manufacture of complex parts such as precision stamping dies, cavity molds, and cutting tools.

Excellent Surface Quality
Excellent Surface Quality

The cut surface achieves low surface roughness (Ra 0.2-0.4 μm). Through multiple trimming cuts, a near-mirror finish can be achieved.

Narrow Kerf
Narrow Kerf

The kerf width is typically around 0.1 mm, minimizing material waste. It is particularly suitable for the fine processing of precious metals (such as titanium and tungsten alloys).

High Degree of Automation

Combined with CAD/CAM software, the system enables automated cutting directly according to program instructions. It can operate unattended for extended periods of time.

Various Materials DSR can be processed by Wire EDM Machining

Wire EDM must be used in conductive materials.

Tool and Die Steels
Tool and Die Steels

The most common applications for wire EDM include stainless steels such as D2, A2, H13, P20, and 440C. These are commonly used in cores, inserts, and special-shaped holes in injection molds, die-casting molds, and stamping dies.

Cemented Carbides
Cemented Carbides

Tungsten-Cobalt (YG) and Tungsten-Titanium-Cobalt (YT) are commonly used in cutting tools, wear-resistant parts, gauges, and wire drawing dies.

Heat-Treated Parts
Heat-Treated Parts

Deformed parts after heat treatment are difficult to machine using conventional cutting methods. Wire EDM effectively avoids this heat-treatment deformation.

High-Temperature Alloys and Superalloys
High-Temperature Alloys and Superalloys

Suitable for machining materials with poor thermal conductivity and severe work hardening, such as Inconel, Hastelloy, and titanium alloys. They are usually used in aircraft engine parts, medical implants, and corrosion-resistant chemical components.

Conductive Ceramics and Metal-Matrix Composites
Conductive Ceramics and Metal-Matrix Composites

Silicon nitride, silicon carbide, and carbon fiber-reinforced metal-matrix composites are also suitable. Highly wear-resistant and high-temperature resistant components for specialized applications.

Aluminum alloys, copper alloys, and ordinary steels

These materials can also be cut using conventional cutting methods, but wire EDM can reach higher precision, a smoother surface finish, and eliminates deformation caused by cutting forces.

What is the wire EDM work principle?

A wire electrode (usually brass, molybdenum, or galvanized) acts as a moving electrode, continuously moving along a set trajectory. The workpiece acts as the other electrode.

A very small gap (approximately 0.01-0.05 mm) is maintained between the workpiece and the wire electrode.

A working fluid (usually deionized water) is introduced into the crack, offering cooling, flushing away metal chips generated during machining, and also providing insulation.

When a pulse voltage is applied between the wire electrode and the workpiece, the insulating fluid in the gap breaks down, creating a short-lived discharge channel. This generates transient high temperatures, bringing in localized metal in the workpiece to melt and vaporize, which is then flushed away by the working fluid.

The wire electrode itself won’t directly cut the workpiece; instead, it removes metal layer by layer through continuous spark discharge, completing the cutting process.

What is the step of wire EDM machining?

Workpiece positioning: The workpiece is secured to the worktable.

Wire threading: The electrode wire is passed through the starting hole or edge of the workpiece.

Programming: The worktable and wire path are controlled according to the CAD/CAM program.

Electro-spark cutting: The wire electrode moves along the path, removing material layer by layer.

Fluid flushing: Continuously removes metal chips from the machining area and maintains a stable discharge.

What size workpieces can you customize with wire EDM?

Our machines, from a well-known brand, can process medium-sized workpieces up to 0.9 m × 0.7 m × 0.3 m and weighing up to 600 kg; and large workpieces up to 1.2 m × 0.8 m × 0.3 m and weighing up to 900 kg.

Differences between wire EDM and traditional EDM (sinking EDM)

  1. Electrode Type

Wire EDM: The electrode is a continuously moving wire. The wire does not participate in forming, but simply “cuts” the workpiece along its path.

EDM (cavity discharge machining): The electrode is a pre-formed block. The workpiece is eroded layer by layer, ultimately replicating the electrode’s shape.

  1. Processing Method

Wire EDM: Similar to a saw, the workpiece is cut along a set path. Complex contours, internal holes, and narrow slots can be cut.

Sinking EDM: The electrode is pressed into the workpiece surface, replicating the electrode’s shape through discharge etching. This is suitable for three-dimensional structures such as mold cavities, grooves, and blind holes.

  1. Workpiece Geometry

Wire EDM: The processing result is primarily a two-dimensional contour cut, with the cut penetrating the workpiece.

Sinking EDM: The process produces three-dimensional cavities/blind holes, but not necessarily through the workpiece.

  1. Accuracy and Surface Quality

Wire EDM: Extremely high accuracy (±0.005mm). The cut is narrow and the surface quality is excellent. Sinking EDM: Slightly lower accuracy (±0.005-0.01 mm). Surface finish can be improved by using different electrodes and multiple discharges.

  1. Applications

Wire EDM: Convex and concave dies for precision molds. Contour cutting for cutting tools, medical devices, and precision aerospace parts.

Sinking EDM: Cavity machining for plastic molds, die-casting molds, and forging dies. Threaded holes, blind holes, and complex grooves.
