Zinc Die Casting Process

Zinc Die Casting Process
Zinc Die Casting Process (1)

We have three main zinc diecasting processes to serve all of our customers’ needs. Hot chamber die casting is the die casting process most frequently applied to zinc alloys. It’s quick, inexpensive, and perfect for making small and medium parts with complex geometries. Gravity die casting relies on pressure from gravity to fill the mold cavity with the material. This process results in very strong parts and is applicable to larger parts. In vacuum die casting, the mould cavity is evacuated before filling it, resulting in less porosity without surface defects. It is great at producing with accuracy and fine detail, and a smooth surface finish.

Zinc’s corrosion resistance and excellent surface finish make it perfect for decorative and functional fasteners. With low tooling wear and high production efficiency, zinc die-cast fasteners are cost-effective for both small and large volumes.

Why is zinc used in die casting? What are its properties?

Zinc is widely used in die casting because it is strong, durable, and easy to form into complex shapes. It has excellent dimensional accuracy, so parts come out with precise details and smooth surfaces. Zinc also allows thin walls, good wear resistance, and long tool life, which makes production efficient and cost-effective. In addition, it is fully recyclable and supports sustainable manufacturing.

What zinc alloys do you provide for die casting?

We supply a full range of zinc alloys, including Zamak 2, Zamak 3, Zamak 5, Zamak 7, EZAC, BERIC, and ZPO410. Each alloy has unique properties to meet different strength, corrosion resistance, and design requirements.

Will zinc die-casting parts rust?

No, zinc die-casting parts do not rust like steel or iron. Zinc naturally protects itself with a thin oxide layer that prevents corrosion. With plating or coating, the protection is even stronger, so the parts stay durable and good-looking for a long time.

Can zinc die casting be welded?

No. Conventional welding is not a reliable method for zinc die-cast components. Zinc alloys have a relatively low melting point and a complex alloy structure, so the intense, localized heat of standard welding often causes burn-through, porosity, and weak, brittle joints. Because of this, welding usually leads to part failure or costly rework rather than a durable repair.

What is multi-slide zinc die casting, and what are its advantages?

Multi-slide zinc die casting uses four or more synchronized slides to inject molten zinc into a single die from different directions. This lets us form complex undercuts, thin walls, and integrated features in one press stroke, often eliminating secondary machining and assembly. It produces precise, repeatable parts with smooth as-cast surfaces, faster cycle times, and lower unit cost for medium-to-high volumes.

What are the most common zinc die casting defects?

Porosity, surface roughness, shrinkage, and cold-shuts are the usual zinc die-casting issues. Smart mold design, strict temperature and shot control, degassing/filtration, and vacuum die casting dramatically reduce these defects.

Zinc Die Casting vs. Aluminum Die Casting

Zinc and aluminum are both common die-casting metals, but they suit different engineering needs. For small, highly detailed components where thin walls, sharp edges, and tight tolerances matter, zinc die casting is often the better choice. Zinc alloys flow extremely well, enabling crisp detail, consistent thin thickness, and excellent surface finish. Because zinc melts at a lower temperature, dies experience less thermal wear, die life is longer, and cycle times are shorter, which translates into lower tooling and per-part costs for precision parts.

Aluminum is preferred when low weight and higher operating temperature are the priorities. It delivers a superior strength-to-weight ratio and better heat resistance, making it suitable for housings, structural parts, and heat-dissipating components used in automotive, aerospace, and industrial applications. Compared with zinc, aluminum processing typically needs more energy and more robust tooling, which can raise upfront tooling costs.
